HALSTEAD  IN  BLOOM

Minutes of a meeting 30th May 2019  7.30p.m. at Halstead Icing

Chairman, welcomed all present and accepted apologies from those who could not attend.

MINUTES of  25th April had been circulated and were adopted

NEWS:   *Flower Festival – Set up of our Bridal display will be on Thursday 20th June.  Volunteers are required Fri/Sat/Sun (21/22/23 June) to marshall, sell teas, etc.  There will be 2 hr. shifts. If you can help, please contact Jan Amos on janet.amos40@yahoo.co.uk. *River Colne Update – John Smith (resident of Halstead) called a meeting of the committee to discuss the way forward, 5 attended but Mill owner and Environment Agency were not present.  Two of the committee – a volunteer River Warden and a member of Essex Wildlife Trust – know of two locations with similar difficulties as Halstead and they volunteered to speak with these locations to see how they had managed and overcome the problems.  Following the meeting communication has been received from The Environment Agency about the way forward as they see it.  They have plans for ‘naturalisation’ of the river bed and clearing some of the woody vegetation that could be a flood hazard. Nothing has been said about the trees growing in the concrete banks nor of the rat problem.  It was noted that the river flow is low at the moment – due to 2 dry winters and a dry summer 2018 and dry again this year so far.   A further meeting of the committee will take place sometime in June.  *Plantgrow product a quantity of the material produced by this company has been delivered to HiB.  It is a purely plant based material and is used as a fertiliser and feed – HiB will trial it in the new tubs at Parsonage Street.  A container of liquid plant food has also been donated. *Bull Meet and Greet Event HiB, along with other town clubs/societies, etc. attended  Several people came along to view the ‘exhibits’ but it was thought these were mostly Halstead residents although one couple who are moving to Halstead showed interest.  It is thought there might be another of these events at a later date.  *Halstead Road Runners and the London Marathon. HRR asked if HiB would consider putting in an application for next year and one of their team will run to raise money for us.  We have given details and await result of the ballot for places.  *Plant Stall update. Chairman thanked all who contributed and helped at the event.  £257.00 was taken on the day – the bedding plants supplied by HiB cost £102.86 so a profit of over £150 was raised at the stall.  Some plants were ‘over’ and have been sold so more cash will be collected.  Some of the ‘overs’ will be used around the town – there are still a few plants in hand.  *Daniel Robinson & Sons visit. Some of the team were given a conducted tour of the premises in High Street (used to be NatWest Bank) and were very interested to see the sympathetic restoration.  A letter of thanks has been written.  *Co-op Fund update. £332.82 has been received as a first instalment of the charity fund organised by the National Co-op (Colchester Rd) for this year.  *Co-op – our thank you. In return for the charity fund money HiB would like to place a display outside the store.  The Manager is enthusiastic about this, but said that the refurbishments (following damage caused by theft) would not be complete for another3/4 months.  He urged HiB to apply for charity funding again as this is a popular community cause. *Financial update. It was reported that to date £1700 has been received at bank for sponsorship (sponsorship runs from 1st June).  Wade International will sponsor the entry beds again and their £500 sponsorship will be paid within a couple of weeks.  It is great that local businesses are prepared to support Halstead in Bloom in this way.
EVENTS:  **Rivercare.  Next event is Sunday 2nd June.  Meet 10am at Sainsbury’s Car Park. *Next Community Litter Pick. Sunday 30th June. ALL WELCOME.  Meet 10.30am at Sainsbury’s Car Park.    *Ridgewell Church Graffiti a tour of the church and viewing and explaining of this medieval artwork will take place on 15th June, 2.30pm.  Cost will be £5 including refreshments; proceeds for Church funds. If you are interested in this fascinating insight into the words and symbols found at the Church please email Elizabeth.crofts@outlook.com or ring 07484 826128 to book a place. *Ridgewell village hall also has a coffee afternoon on the last Friday of each month to get villagers and visitors together. Coffee and Cake £2.00. *HiB Quiz for 2019.  Friday 18th October.
LOCAL  GARDEN  COMPETITON.  6 entries have been received so far – could do with more!  All past judges have agreed to take part this year, for which we are grateful.  Some posters/entry forms are available, contact me if required.  More of the ‘thank you’ notes were requested, and Margaret T asked for some specifically for allotment holders.

ANGLIA  IN  BLOOM’19.         DATE FOR BRITAIN IN BLOOM – 1st August (9am to 12noon)
RHS BRITAIN  IN  BLOOM ’19  No date yet received for Anglia in Bloom judging, I will advise as soon as I know.  Some weed spraying has been done by BDC, I will ascertain what is still to be done.  Seat has been removed from Churchill Avenue for renovation. HiB has been told that the area outside W.H.Smith will be renovated and repaired in the near future. BDC have purchased a litter clearing machine – called The Glutton – that should assist with clearing cigarette ends, etc.  It was said that new troughs have been purchased to replace those stolen at Trinity Flats – haven’t yet been fitted as brackets weren’t supplied.  Joan still has 3 troughs at her house.  It was said that the area around Trinity Flats is a disgrace with dog ends/weeds and general litter.  The area outside U.R.C. is also weedy, but one of the congregation will clear.  Hume’s have offered to host the judges refreshments and the Bowls Club is pleased to offer their venue for this.   *Children’s Competition.
