Minutes of a meeting 26th July  2018  7.30p.m. at Halstead Icing – outside!!

 Chairman, welcomed all present and accepted apologies from those who could not attend.  New member Angela was welcomed.

 

MINUTES of  28th June 2018 had been circulated and were adopted

 

NEWS:  * Councillors’ Grants – New Containers: it was reported that HiB has been awarded £1500.00 from BDC Councillor Grants (£500 each from Cllr Mrs Pell, Cllr Mrs Allen and Cllr Kirby.  Cllr Hume was precluded from giving grant as he is closely linked with HiB).  HiB”s request for grant from Halstead TC was not successful.  *Money from Co-op.  HiB has received a further £235.52 from National Co-op (Colchester Rd) as part of their Charity Partnership scheme.  *New Projector has been donated to HiB by Oliver – thank you!  Another, older, projector has been donated by member of U3A.  *Geoff Willis’ Tree. The Halstead Conservation Group intends to purchase a tree and plant it at Coggeshall Pieces in memory of Geoff and HiB has made it known that we would like to contribute to the cost of the tree.  *Halstead Road Runners have invited team members to receive a cheque as donation from Halstead Marathon 2018 on Wednesday 8th August. 7pm at the Sports Pavilion, Courtaulds Sports Ground.  *21st Century Group have produced ‘an alternative vision’ for the land East of High Street – a Halstead Heritage Park.  Presentation folder was shown, and there is more information on their website and Facebook page.  Links are;- https://youtu.be/Vu3gUY-qvPs and  https://www.facebook.com/343175156166239/posts/427717511045336/ Group was holding a meeting on the same evening as HiB meeting, but we are told it was well attended.*emails from visitors. 2 emails have been received this week from visitors to the Town: one from a gentleman who cycled from Long Melford on the recommendation of his wife just to view the flowers – he commented specifically on the display at the Library. The second was just an unsolicited comment from a lady who visited and thanked all who contribute to the fantastic displays.  Lovely!!


EVENTS:
   *Rivercare.  Next event is Sunday 5th August.  Meet 10am at Sainsbury’s Car Park. *Next Community Litter Pick. Sunday 29th July. and the next on 26th August.  Meet 10.30am at Sainsbury’s Car Park.  *Armed Forces Day Event.    Was well attended with plenty for visitors to see and take part in.  HiB took £15 on the ‘guess the name of the chimp’ game (chimp wasn’t won, so will be used for another event).  Book sales raised £25.60.  A donation of £10 was given to the Royal British Legion.  *Flower Festival was visited by over 750 people and had cleared funds for the Friends of St. Andrew’s Church.  All were thanked for their contributions. *Sci-Fi Trail All items have been delivered to shops – all who were asked have been most co-operative.  Entry is free, forms from Halstead Icing.  Trail to run from 27th July to 31st August. Halstead Empire Theatre have donated at £30 voucher as first prize.  *Priory Hall Coffee Morning.  Residents of Priory Hall have kindly said they will host a fund raising coffee morning for HiB and the date chosen is 18th October. Opening at 11am. (set up from 10.15)  Further details later.  *Quiz.  Should be in your diaries for 12th October!!  Posters will need to be printed and displayed from mid-September.  Raffle Prizes will be sought – please give any you have to Margaret Tyler who will arrange ticket sales.  Please book tables in good time!!  *Van is booked for collection of winter plants on 27th October, planting on 28th October.


LOCAL  GARDEN  COMPETITION. 
Judging took place over last weekend: entries from 26 people against 32 people in 2017.  Standards were high and judges who took part enjoyed their task.  All judges will be thanked.  Date for Awards was suggested as 19th October or 26th October – Church to be booked.  It was suggested that entrants be asked to bring photos of their gardens and a photo board can be set up so that all can see the fruits of their labours.  All entrants will be advised of their results and invited to the Awards evening within the next 2/3 weeks.

ANGLIA  IN  BLOOM’18.  de-brief.   Team thought that there were too many in the judging party, although the Judges didn’t seem fazed by the number of people along with them.  Some of the team, and residents, were upset that the photo on the front of the Halstead Gazette didn’t have volunteers to the fore.  Unfortunately we have no say about what goes in the newspaper.  The photos were taken at the beginning of the tour and volunteers were deliberately stationed around the Town.  Other than this, it was thought that the tour went well.  Team asked that thanks be passed on to all who helped with painting, new signs, replaced bins, etc. to get the Town looking in tip top condition.  It was noted that some seats at the bottom of High Street look tatty and investigations are under way to see who has ownership of these and other street furniture.

Anglia in Bloom Awards will be in Bury St. Edmunds on 12th September.  Each entrant is limited to only 5 places and names of all those who have asked to be included have been sent to Anglia in Bloom.  Menu choices also need to be sent and then we will have to wait to see who can attend.  Money has to be paid up front, and this will be done by way of a cheque.  Halstead’s party at present stands at 12.  BDC have asked for 3 places in lieu of their Public Gardens and Cemetery entries.  Closing date for names/menus to be passed to AiB is 19th August.

WORKING  PARTIESFor all working parties meet, for the time being,  at 9.30a.m. on Town Bridge/Halstead Icing car park unless advised otherwiseTuesday 31st July.   Factory Lane West, weeding and tidying.  Thursday 2nd August   Tidy, deadhead and weed at various locations.  Further working parties to be arranged to suit necessary works.  Keep in touch to get details.
ANY OTHER BUSINESS:  *Annie spoke about the proposed Poppy Cascade to be made by a group of friends and permission has been given for this display to be shown on the steps of the Library at the appropriate time in November.  Annie has knitting/crochet patterns, or they can be obtained at Hyacinth Tea Rooms.  Various care homes, etc. have been contacted and will contribute.  All poppies will be displayed on a hessian backing.  *Chris asked for dates booked for HiB to speak. They are (so far!): 10th October – Black Notley Gardening Club (1.30pm.)  17th October – Halstead Townswomen’s Guild (2p.m.) 6th December – Tiptree Gardening Club (7.30p.m.)  *David spoke about arrangements for the Quiz and asked that all try to get bookings for tables.  *Carol has taken some cuttings of the Ipomea and has rooted them in water and will grow them on.  They aren’t hardy but Carol will try to keep them in a greenhouse. Carol also noted that the seed drill on Sudbury Road has some rotten panels.  It was said that no refurbishment can take place until summer bedding is removed.  Some major work is necessary on the seed drill – it will take a great deal of time and materials to make it look good again.  *Margaret C thanked all for their support and help during her time on crutches – she commented that it was a good way to get out of work!!  *Joan spoke about plans of residents at Hawthorn Close to tidy up a piece of neglected grass in front of their houses.  It is in the vicinity of Coggeshall Pieces so will need to be sympathetically planted.  Margaret E has been offered a Rowan Tree that may be OK for this location.  Joan also spoke about a project at Holy Trinity School where there is a neglected garden that Parents and Teachers want to bring back into use.  *Oliver said that the Facebook page is gaining friends and likes and he will give a better  update at the next meeting. Details of the Sci Fi Trail are on the Page and details of the Community Litter Pick will be added.  *Mike Noted that the Si Fi Trail are advertised on the HiB web site, and details of the litter pick will also be added.

Minutes of a meeting 28th June  2018  7.30p.m. at Halstead Icing – outside!!

 Chairman, welcomed all present and accepted apologies from those who could not attend.  New member James who has volunteered to water at Blamsters was welcomed.

 

MINUTES of 31st May 2018 had been circulated and were adopted

 

NEWS:  *Plant Sorting Day.  Joan commented that in future it will be better to have the plants in the shaded area but otherwise seemed to work well.  Have asked (pleaded!) for the higher entry van for next collections.  *Calendar 2019. Joan has a proof and will circulate for proof reading.  It would be good to get the calendar to printers early next week.  Please pass your comments to me asap.  *Braintree DC Volunteer Awards 2018.  Halstead was nominated in some categories and certificates of recognition were given to the In Bloom team in the Volunteer Group category and to Graham Smith in the Long Service category.  Well done all!  *New containers.  We are trying to renew and standardise containers in the Town Centre area and to get the ‘self watering’ ones where possible to minimise water usage.  All 4 District Councillors have been asked to contribute some of their grant allocation – so far Cllr Julia Allen has agreed to help – and Halstead TC has been asked for a grant allocation also.  The cost of renewal will be over £3000 so we will have to make decisions depending on allocations awarded,  *Geoff Willis.  HiB was given the sad news that Geoff Willis passed away suddenly on Saturday 16th June.  Geoff was a supporter of Halstead in Bloom and a leading member of Halstead Conservation Group.  He acted as Tree Warden for Halstead for some time.  He was well respected and admired.  Geoff’s funeral will be on 5th July at 10.30 at Halstead Baptist Church followed by a family service at Three Counties Crematorium.

Tickets £6 including a free draw ticket.  Saturday: Event in Halstead Public Gardens 2pm to 6pm with lots going on in the arena and many stalls around the perimeter.  HiB to set up at 12noon.  Will be selling books and have a ‘Name the Chimp’ contest.  The new ‘plane is now flying in Halstead Public Gardens.  It is a Sopwith Camel bi-plane and looks amazing.  Well done Joan and daughter Pauline. (Joan thanked Margaret for use of her garage for fabrication of the plane).  HiB has made plaques for each Halstead man killed in WW1 and these will be planted in flower beds in the Public Gardens for Saturday.  We will also have displays advertising the forthcoming Flower Festival that will take place at St. Andrew’s Church on 13/14/15 July.  Sunday:  there will be a service to commemorate the new flower bed depicting a poppy and honouring the end of WW1.   Bed was designed and planted by Joan Gibson.  The Fields of Trust sign will also be dedicated and commemorated at this service. *Sci-Fi Trail is coming along well.  It is hoped to start getting the objects into shops from 22nd July onwards and sheets will be available by the end of July.  *Priory Hall Coffee Morning.  Residents of Priory Hall have kindly said they will host a fund raising coffee morning for HiB and the date chosen is 18th October.  Further details later.  *Quiz.  Should be in your diaries!!  Confirmed as 12th October.

Cllr Vanessa Santomauro (Chairman BDC) (Saturday) Joan Gibson.  John and Alison Brett (Saturday) David Tarbun.  Entries are trickling in – probably due to the lack of rain in recent weeks.

Tour will begin at 10.30am (now confirmed) as judges will be visiting Gosfield Village first starting at 8.30amRoute was studied and any necessary works will be done.  Note from Rick Sargeant (Braintree DC) was read out detailing works that have been/will be done.  All agreed this is a good effort.  Jason and Tim have weed killed various areas and are working on some remedial works, thanks to them.  Some works are still outstanding by Essex CC.  A letter from Just Sow Gardens re. the HALSTEAD bed in Colchester Road was read.  Maggie and Gary have been thanked for all their hard work and donations here, and at the entrance to Nether Court.   We hope for a warm (not too hot) and dry day for judging!  Lunch will be at the Bowls Club, provided by Hume’s.  It will be a quick pit-stop for the Judges but all are invited to relax and enjoy the day.  We need to provide 6 photos of each of our ‘Special’ entries.  Chris has 6 each of Grow Your Own and Best Under 12.  Annie has 6 of the Resource Centre and Mick will take 6 of Coggeshall Pieces. Margaret T will supply 6 of the Guides Allotment. If you have any of the other areas please pass them on to me as soon as you can.

Entries will be displayed in Halstead Public Gardens and the judges will see them during their tour of the Gardens.  *Margaret E asked if there will be a meeting in August – throw it open!  Do you want an August meeting?  if not, Margaret suggested a Fish and Chip supper at the July meeting.

(Joan thanked Margaret for use of her garage for fabrication of the plane).  HiB has made plaques for each Halstead man killed in WW1 and these will be planted in flower beds in the Public Gardens for Saturday.  We will also have displays advertising the forthcoming Flower Festival that will take place at St. Andrew’s Church on 13/14/15 July.  Sunday:  there will be a service to commemorate the new flower bed depicting a poppy and honouring the end of WW1.   Bed was designed and planted by Joan Gibson.  The Fields of Trust sign will also be dedicated and commemorated at this service. *Sci-Fi Trail is coming along well.  It is hoped to start getting the objects into shops from 22nd July onwards and sheets will be available by the end of July.  *Priory Hall Coffee Morning.  Residents of Priory Hall have kindly said they will host a fund raising coffee morning for HiB and the date chosen is 18th October.  Further details later.  *Quiz.  Should be in your diaries!!  Confirmed as 12th October.

LOCAL  GARDEN  COMPETITION.  Judges now confirmed and the following agreed to accompany judges on their tours:  Cllr Wendy Schmitt (Saturday)  Margaret Eskins.  Charles Soule (Saturday) Margaret Tyler. Cllr Sue Wilson (Sunday) Margaret Eskins.  Cllr Steve Kirby (Sunday) Thelma and Joyce. Cllr Lyn Walters (Saturday) Annie Rees. Cllr Vanessa Santomauro (Chairman BDC) (Saturday) Joan Gibson.  John and Alison Brett (Saturday) David Tarbun.  Entries are trickling in – probably due to the lack of rain in recent weeks.

ANGLIA  IN  BLOOM’18.  JUDGING  DATE  NOW  CONFIRMED  AS  FRIDAY 13TH JULY.

Tour will begin at 10.30am (now confirmed) as judges will be visiting Gosfield Village first starting at 8.30amRoute was studied and any necessary works will be done.  Note from Rick Sargeant (Braintree DC) was read out detailing works that have been/will be done.  All agreed this is a good effort.  Jason and Tim have weed killed various areas and are working on some remedial works, thanks to them.  Some works are still outstanding by Essex CC.  A letter from Just Sow Gardens re. the HALSTEAD bed in Colchester Road was read.  Maggie and Gary have been thanked for all their hard work and donations here, and at the entrance to Nether Court.   We hope for a warm (not too hot) and dry day for judging!  Lunch will be at the Bowls Club, provided by Hume’s.  It will be a quick pit-stop for the Judges but all are invited to relax and enjoy the day.  We need to provide 6 photos of each of our ‘Special’ entries.  Chris has 6 each of Grow Your Own and Best Under 12.  Annie has 6 of the Resource Centre and Mick will take 6 of Coggeshall Pieces. Margaret T will supply 6 of the Guides Allotment. If you have any of the other areas please pass them on to me as soon as you can.

WORKING  PARTIESFor all working parties meet at 2p.m. on Town Bridge unless advised otherwiseTuesday 3rd July.   Weaver’s Court.  Planting, weeding and tidying.  Thursday 5th July  Front of Resource Centre/Colchester Road, etc.  Tidy and weed.  Tuesday 10th July  Butler Road area.  Tidy and clean.  After that any urgent areas and deadheading, etc.  *Please Note. Joan and Julia are away 5th and 6th July.  Monday  9th July.  Monday morning 16th July and Friday 20th July (on AiB judging duties).

ANY OTHER BUSINESS:  *Linda reported a tree branch that has fallen over the river walk (Parsonage St. to Colchester Road).  Will be reported.  It was also said that the crack in the path has opened up again due to the dry weather.  *Fiona noted pigeon mess on pavements outside Bridge Personnel and also outside the Oak pub in High Street.  Will be reported.  *Annie noted weeds outside the former Post Office in High Street.  Will be dealt with.  *Iola commented that the Colchester Road Entry Bed has been planted but needs more compost.  This will be done – Joan said that Hedingham Road bed also needs more compost.  *Jenny said that the wooden container outside Costa is quite weedy.  It was agreed that team will weed and ‘hide’ the bed before judging!  *David noted that the two benches in Colchester Road have been painted and now look good.  Thank you Braintree DC.  *Margaret T said that 9 entries for the Children’s Competition have now been received (one of them with multiple entries). Entries will be displayed in Halstead Public Gardens and the judges will see them during their tour of the Gardens.  *Margaret E asked if there will be a meeting in August – throw it open!  Do you want an August meeting?  if not, Margaret suggested a Fish and Chip supper at the July meeting.
